LDWF Agents Cite Three Subjects for Shrimping Violations in Terrebonne and Plaquemines Parishes
Baton Rouge, - Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries enforcement agents cited three subjects for alleged shrimping violations on Aug. 13 and 14 in Terrebonne and Plaquemines parishes.
Agents cited Paul J. Pierre, 56, of Houma, Michael Champlin, 55, of Buras, and Mikeal Bethelot, 25, of Buras, for using skimmer nets during a closed season.
LDWF agents were on patrol on Aug. 13 in the area of Pass Des Ilettes in Terrebonne Parish when they encountered Pierre actively using skimmer nets in a closed shrimping area.
Agents found Pierre with 1,550 pounds of shrimp on board. Agents seized the shrimp and sold them to the highest bidder.
On Aug. 14 agents were on patrol in the area of Sandy Point Bay in Plaquemines Parish when they found Champlin and Bethelot actively using skimmer nets in a closed shrimping area.
Agents found the subjects in possession of 20 pounds of live shrimp in the nets. Agents seized the shrimp and returned them to the water.
Using skimmer nets during a closed season brings a $400 to $950 fine and up to 120 days in jail.
The inside waters in both areas opened to shrimping on Aug. 17 at 6 p.m.
Agents participating in these cases are Sgt. Norman Deroche, Sgt. Gary Levron, Sgt. Brett Nabors and Corporal Heather Fitzgerald.
